講座名稱:DRA Audio Coding Standard: Technology and Road to International Standard

講座時間:2015-04-15 15:00

講座地點:主樓2區227

講座人:Yuli You

講座人介紹:

Yuli You received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Minnesota in Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA, in 1995 and MS and BS degrees from Xidian University, Xian, China, in 1988 and 1985, respectively. He was an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota, a Principle Engineer (Director of Technology) at Qualcomm (California, USA), a Senior Engineer at DTS (California, USA), and a Senior Engineer at Seagate (Minnesota, USA). He founded Digital Rise Technology in 2004 with funding from Guangdong Provincial Government and served as its CTO and Vice President until 2009. He is currently the Chief Technology Advisor for Guoguang Electric Company Ltd., a company listed on Shenzhen Stock Exchange.

Yuli is the inventor of DRA audio coding algorithm, which is a national standard of China and part of the international Blu-ray Disc format. He is a recipient of Outstanding Patented Invention from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the United Nations (聯合國世界知識產權組織杰出發明獎), 中國專利金獎 and 信息產業重大技術發明獎. He has more than 50 issued international patents and has been cited more than 2000 times (Google Scholar), mostly from the 5 IEEE journal papers written to fulfill his Ph.D. research requirements. His audio coding book was published by Springer USA in 2010.

講座內容:

DRA audio coding standard is the first and probably still the only fully-owned Chinese national standard adopted by a major international industry alliance. It is being widely deployed in various broadcasting markets, including mobile TV, terrestrial TV, satellite direct TV and digital audio broadcasting. This presentation will start with basic properties of audio signals and psychoacoustics as applicable to audio coding, explore fundamental approaches to obtaining compact representations of audio signals, and discuss important issues related to developing a commercially viable algorithm. It will then describe a generic structure for audio coding algorithms and discuss how it was embodied in a few audio coding standards, including DRA. Finally presented will be an overview of the journey from developing an audio coding algorithm to an international standard.
